Related Factors of Overweight in Elementary School Children

Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to find the factors associated with overweight children.

Method: The subjects in this study were 232 elementary school children, and we invegstigated with structured questionnaire during July, 2004.

Result: 1. The overweight rate of boys was 29.1%, and that of girls was 20.7%. The prevalence rate of boys was higher but not statistically significant. 2. Not alive with parents, lower education level of father, and overweight of parents were more likly to show a higher rate of overweight in children. Especially, overweight of mother were statistically significant(p<0.05). 3. Less activity were significantly more likely to show a higher rate of overweight (p<0.05). 4. Liking instant food group were more likely to show a higher degree of overweight(p<0.05). 5. In multiple logistic regression analysis, overweight of mother and liking instant food were significant variables.

Conclusion: We recommand that the obesity prevention programs with mother and education about overweight &
obestiy by eating behavior and physical activity to children are developed.
